Laurel Smith is a Washington State Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a Master's Degree in Social Work from State University of New York at Albany, and a Bachelor's of Science degree from Nazareth College, Rochester New York. Laurel is credentialed as an ethnic minority mental health specialist, child and family counselor and Domestic Violence victim and offender treatment provider.
Following a number of years in private practice Laurel most recently worked at Madigan Army Medical Center in the Behavioral Health Department providing psychotherapy to service members and families. Laurel has also worked as a Clinical Director in a Community Mental Health in Wilmington, North Carolina.
I draw from a variety of practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy. My approach is strength-based and collaborative. I believe that we all seek a sense of integration and balance in our lives, and that our lives become empowered and enhanced through dedication to our personal growth. I firmly believe that the answers we seek are found within us, and I endeavor to help clients to discover their own unique solutions.
Laurel sees teens, adults and older adults in therapy. She is a Master Therapist in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (A.R.T.). This psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies is shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly (usually within 1-5 sessions). Clients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessions, sexual abuse and many other mental and physical conditions can experience remarkable benefits starting in the first session.
Laurel has traveled extensively, and is always happy to return to her home and family in the Pacific Northwest. She enjoys drawing, painting and frequenting art galleries. Laurel is especially interested in symbols, and metaphors and how they are expressed in people's lives.
