Education

Judith McCarthy is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a Master's Degree in clinical psychology. Her first Bachelor of Science Degree was in biology with a minor in secondary education from Hastings College in Nebraska and she holds a second undergraduate degree in psychology from Kearney State College in Nebraska. Her Master's Degree was received from the University of Idaho in 1980.

Work Background

Judith spent 11 years working within the community mental health system both in Whitman and Skagit Counties in Washington State. Judith was an out-patient therapist as well as a County Designated Mental Health Professional. She received further designation as a Child Mental Health Specialist. She spent a year as a counselor at the University of Idaho Counseling Center. Judith also taught in the Human Services Department of Skagit Valley College.

Judith has been in private practice in the Skagit Valley since 1989. She maintains a full-time practice and also co-administers Skagit Behavioral Health. Judith helped create and sits on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Behavioral Health Independent Provider Association.

Practice Description

Judith sees children, adults, families, and couples in therapy and consultation. She works with individuals on issues ranging from depression, bi-polar disorder, anxiety disorders, grief and loss, trauma recovery, and adjustment disorders. She has special expertise in helping adults and children deal with the trauma of divorce and building skills as successful co-parents.

Orientation

Judith's approach to therapy and counseling incorporates a number of theoretical paradigms. Client-therapist rapport is essential coupled with an educational/informational format. Judith focuses on the biological, the psychological and the sociological aspects of a person's life. She uses both interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral approaches.

    Judith and her family have been in the valley since 1986. She and her husband have one adult son. Her family has traveled extensively and loves experiencing new cultures. On her off time, she can often be found at the ceramic studio throwing pottery and working on other clay projects.
